The Best Photographers

on Saturday, April 25, 2009

It seems the best photographers know instinctively when to grab the camera instead of stare when something special is happening. Take the other day, for example; a big, juicy turkey came sauntering through our back yard. I grabbed the camera and took this picture before he detected us and ran away.

With no zoom to speak of, it was a mediocre shot at best. What happened next was the great opportunity--Bria quickly ran outside and chased the thing for a couple of hundred yards into the next neighborhood! The sight of her chasing it would have been priceless.

Here's another example--this afternoon we went to Dutch Days at Thanksgiving Point. All the thousands of tulips were in bloom and it looked like Keukenhof in the Netherlands. I took a few artful pictures like these:

Then there's the rest of the story. It began raining so hard everyone ran for cover. A bunch of people running like crazy through the tulips in the pouring rain? That would have been good. Unfortunately, I was one of them. There were some great people photos, too, like Mother-in-law who is dying, spending what could be one of her last outdoor adventures together with the family in such photogenic place.

These are definitely lessons learned. Next time, get out the camera!
